Born in Leon County, Texas, September 30, 1930, to Jimmy Lee Garrett and Bessie R. Anderson. James lived a long and full life marked by devotion to family, hard work, and a love of the outdoors.

James proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge from the military, he worked as a mechanic for 45 years, where his skill and dedication earned the respect and admiration of many. He was happiest working with his hands, taking care of his garden of peppers, okra, and many other vegetables, working on projects around the home, or helping the neighbors and the neighbors helping him. He also cherished time spent fishing and hunting, pursuits that connected him deeply to the land he loved.

James married the loved of his life, Velma Fay (Burkhead) Garrett and together they shared 70 years of marriage, building a life rich in love and family. They were blessed with three children, who became the center of his world.

James is survived by his devoted wife, Velma Garrett; children, Cathy Hunter, Betty Fruge and husband, John, and Becky Scoggins and husband, Bob; grandchildren, Eric Hunter and wife, Loretta, Sean Hunter and wife, Nicole, and Clayton Charman and wife, Jessica; and great-granddaughter, Sophie Hunter. His legacy of love, perseverance, and kindness will live on in each of them.

James will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, whose life was defined by service, hard work, love for his family and his family's love and devotion to him.

His greatest gift was the joy he brought through his sense of humor and the ease with which he connected with everyone.
