James Richard Rhodes, a proud Marine, devoted family man, and lifelong resident of the Fort Worth area, passed away Monday, July 13, 2026, in Spring, Texas, at the age of 88.

Born in Fort Worth on August 11, 1937, to Benjamin and Helen Rhodes, James grew up with a deep love for his roots. He went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Marine Corps, a defining chapter of his life that introduced him to firearms and sparked a lifelong passion. James was an avid owner of rifles and handguns, and a fierce, unwavering believer in every American's right to bear arms.

After his service, James built a beautiful life in Blue Mound, Texas, alongside his adored wife, Nancy Mae Rhodes. James loved Nancy fiercely, knowing deep in his heart that she was truly irreplaceable. Together, they raised two children, Everett and Maxine, who grew up knowing their father was a fearless protector and a truly one-of-a-kind man.

James lived by a simple but powerful code: God, family, and country were the things that mattered most, and he honorably demonstrated this belief until the very end.

To know James was to know his legendary garden. Gardening was his favorite hobby and a source of immense pride. A true labor of love, his garden yielded the juiciest tomatoes for his family and pounds of fresh green beans that he generously gifted to friends. He loved experimenting with his harvest, even mastering the art of making his own sauerkraut.

James had a vibrant love for life and knew how to enjoy the simple pleasures. He was happiest hosting backyard cookouts, playing horseshoes with friends, sitting at his bar with a cold beer, and watching his favorite movie, "Patton," over and over again. His unique laugh, quirky personality, and joyful spirit will never be forgotten by those who had the privilege to love him.

James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Mae Rhodes; his parents, Benjamin and Helen Rhodes; his brother, Glenn Rhodes; and his sister, Christine Faris.

He leaves behind a rich legacy and is survived by his twin sister, Janis Atha; his sister, Doris Atha; his son, James Everett Rhodes; his daughter, Maxine Marie Wiborg; seven cherished grandchildren; and five adored great-grandchildren.
