Obituary

On Tuesday, November 10, 2020, Larry Adkisson, loving husband, father, grandfather and minister, went to be with the Lord at the age of 73. He graciously served in many different roles throughout his life as a military veteran, youth minister, choir/music director, missionary, and Pastor. Each of these roles, he embraced with a servant's heart. His last day on earth was spent serving others. Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, November 13, 2020 at Metropolitan Baptist Church. Service: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 14, 2020 at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 6051 Azle Avenue, Lake Worth, Texas 76135. Larry was born in Lindale, Texas to Hugh and Aldera Adkisson. He grew up and attended school in Duncan, Oklahoma. It was there that he met his wife LaRue in 1968. They had two daughters and a son, and were married for 51 years. His life as a minister began while serving as youth minister for 15 years. He loved the energy that the young people brought and loved encouraging them in their faith. While ministering to youth, he felt the call upon his heart to serve the beautiful people of South Africa. Larry and his family spent ten years serving in the mission field there. He immediately fell in love with the culture and the people. He saw many great things accomplished in the hearts and lives of the dear friends that he made while living there. His time in South Africa came to an end when he answered the call to become pastor at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Lake Worth, Texas, where he enjoyed continuing to minister locally, all the while still holding a global ministry mindset. In the final years of his life, he served as Associate Pastor at Friendship Baptist Church in Hurst, Texas. In every role he undertook, he endeavored to individually impact the lives of people he served with love. One of Larry's greatest enjoyments in life was to be there for people. No call or time was an inconvenience for him. He could easily start a conversation with everyone he met. He found joy in the opportunity of getting to know others on a deeper level, especially his family. He loved having his children and grandchildren come over to spend time with him. He was greatly invested in each of their lives and interested in what they loved. One of Larry's other great passions was music. If you spent any time around Larry, you would know this to be true. He loved to sing and he equally loved inspiring others to sing out with a full heart. His deep love of others and music has left a lasting impact on this world. He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Hugh Adkisson; mother, Aldera Adkisson; sister, Dana Adkisson, and brother-in-law, Mark Cone. He is survived by his loving wife, LaRue Adkisson; his children, Lisa Simmons and her husband, Chad, daughter, Lanee Jones and her husband, Travis, son, Brian Adkisson and his wife, Meredith; eight grandchildren, Emily Simmons, Melissa Jones, Ben Simmons, Madison Jones, Max Jones, Ella Adkisson, Maelie Adkisson, and Tatum Adkisson; sister, Darla Scroggins and her husband, Kent; sister, Charme Cone; sisters-in-law, Billie Rae Roach and her husband, James, Vicki Dalton and her husband, Gary, Kathy O'Neal; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
