Mildred was a remarkable woman who lived with love, strength, compassion, and an unwavering spirit. She was a devoted wife, mother, a loving grandmother, a proud great-grandmother, and a cherished aunt. Mildred was also known as Mom, Mamaw, Aunt Mildred, Merrel, Milly, and Boots.
Mildred met and married the love of her life in 1954. Through Jack’s military career they traveled the world together. She embraced new places, new experiences, and the adventures that life had to offer while raising her kids and making her own sacrifices to support her military spouse.
Mildred lived the description of the virtuous wife in Proverbs 31. She was a loving, forgiving, and gracious wife to Jack for 48 years. With a needle, thread, and her own two hands, she could create something beautiful and meaningful. Sewing was more than a hobby; it reflected her patience, creativity, and the love she poured into everything she made. “She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy” Boots was a woman who gave generously of herself, helped others without hesitation, and left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.
Mildred was a fiercely strong-willed woman who lived life on her terms (i.e. hardheaded). A lot of the time those terms included sonic ice, a coke, and something sweet. “She can laugh at the days to come” and laugh is what she did! Mamaw never got too burdened by the hard seasons, not because she didn’t take them seriously but because she had unwavering faith that gave her peace to laugh and enjoy every day. Being clothed with strength and dignity was a necessary part of her day. She wasn’t accepting visitors, running errands, or even driving around to find an old cemetery without having her teeth in, being fully dressed, and her face on. Mildred had pride in who she was and quietly demanded respect for her dignity. She believed in doing what needed to be done and was never afraid to roll up her sleeves and get to work. Along with the wisdom and faithful instruction on her tongue Mildred also came armed with quick wit and a nugget of “truth” you might not want to hear.
Above all, Mildred's greatest legacy is the love she so freely gave to each person who came into her life. Her strength, determination, generosity, and love will continue to live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and all those who were blessed to know her. Though our hearts are heavy with her passing, we find comfort in the memories she leaves behind, the lessons she taught us, and knowing she is resting at the feet of Jesus.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joel F. & Mildred Bennett; husband, Charles Hargrove; and siblings, Joel Bennett (Lee), Edward Bennett (Francis), and Frida Bennett.
Mildred is survived by her siblings, Lou Harris and Timothy Bennett; her children Thomas Hargrove (Donna), Virginia Hargrove, Lynn Royal (Joeseph Damn-it), Jackie Soles, Juanita Cook (Trey), and Marvin Hargrove; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends will miss her dearly.
Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done. ~ Proverbs 31:30-31a
