Interment: Ash Creek Cemetery
Visitation: 6 - 8 pm., Thursday, October 14, 2021, at Biggers Funeral Home
He was born on November 5, 1928, in Caney, Oklahoma and moved to Azle, Texas in 1957 with his wife, Polly, and their four children. A few years later they added two more children to the family. As the children grew, they became involved with youth baseball and helped to build on to their church, Castle Hills Baptist.
Over the years, Murphy worked for several different companies including General Motors and Dee Womack Concrete. But the job that he loved the most was Azle ISD where he was employed for over 47 years. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and the Moose Lodge. He and his family were known throughout Azle for the fundraising benefits they would put on for those in need. When he wasn't driving the school bus, he could be found mowing, hunting, gardening, singing karaoke or barbecuing. He worked hard and he played hard!
While he couldn't serve in the military himself, he and Polly left a legacy of military service in their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Polly Mears; sons, Hoyle Mears and Donnie Mears.
He is survived by his daughters, Retha Schultz and Debbie Mears; sons, Marlin Mears and his wife, Pat, and Keith Mears; 13 Grandchildren; many Great Grandchildren; Great-Great Grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Roland, and many nieces and nephews.
