Roy "Max" Baucum, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on July 11, 2026, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Funeral services will be held on October 3 at St. Anne’s Church, followed by interment at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Additional details will be shared as they become available.

Max lived a life defined by service, adventure, devotion to family, and an enduring love of aviation. He was many things throughout his life: a son, farmer, soldier, husband, father, brother, uncle, and loyal friend. He was deeply devoted to his family, had a special love for animals, and possessed a quick wit and contagious sense of humor that brought joy to all who knew him.

Born on May 27, 1944, in Anson, Texas, Max was the youngest of four children born to Charles "C.A." and Gracie Baucum. Growing up on the Texas plains, he developed a fascination with aviation at an early age and dreamed of taking to the skies. That passion led him to pursue crop dusting and earn a scholarship to the University of North Texas. His education was interrupted, however, when he answered the call to serve his country during the Vietnam era.

Max proudly served in the United States Air Force for more than four years. Following his military service, he built a remarkable career in aviation, flying more than 30 different aircraft throughout his professional life. He served as an instructor pilot, demonstration pilot, production flight test pilot, and corporate pilot. His career took him around the world, where he flew prominent business leaders, dignitaries, and even several presidents. He was also a proud member of the Quiet Birdmen, a historic organization honoring accomplished aviators.

At the age of 48, Max met the love of his life, Melissa. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, adventure, and unwavering companionship, sharing nearly 33 wonderful years of marriage. Through every season of life, they remained devoted partners and best friends.

When retirement finally arrived, Max hung up his wings and returned home, where he embraced the simple joys of life surrounded by family and the animals he loved so dearly. Whether spending time with loved ones, sharing stories, or caring for his beloved pets, he found happiness in life's everyday moments. Though Alzheimer's gradually changed his daily life, it never diminished the love and memories he shared with those closest to him.

Max was preceded in death by his parents, Charles "C.A." and Gracie Baucum; his brother, Charles Baucum; his sister, Joyce Baucum Brown; three nephews; and two beloved fur babies.

He is survived by his loving wife, Melissa Bateman Baucum; his daughter, Ashley Hazle (Larry); his grandson, Preston; his cherished fur babies, Maverick and Maisie; his sister, Sondra Lindsey; his sisters-in-law, Vera Baucum and Kim Bue (Bill); and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends whose lives were enriched by his presence.
