She attended Hendrick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Abilene from September 1954 through September 1957 and received her designation of Registered Nurse on December 4, 1957. During her training, a dietician at the hospital introduced Mary to her son; and on May 31, 1957, Jimmy Joe Grounds of Novice, Texas, and Mary were married.
